Bay Area Doctor Combats Heart Defects for Valentine’s Day
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 14, 2014 -- Every year, 1.3 million babies are born with a congenital heart defect, the most common birth defect in the world. However, nearly 90% of the world’s children lack access to life-saving heart care. Fortunately, heroes like Dr. Nilas Young, recipient of the 2012 World of Children Health Award, are ensuring more children have access to cardiac treatment and care. Through February 14, World of Children Award is supporting Dr. Young’s vital work with a special Valentine’s Day fundraising campaign.
“As a father, I know that nothing in life can be as bad as having a child with a life-threatening illness,” Dr. Young said. “When I meet with parents who are desperate to have the life of their child saved, I know that their trust and faith in me puts me in a unique position to make a real difference in the life of a child and his whole family. It is a privilege and honor to have an opportunity to save someone’s life.”
In 2012, World of Children Award honored Dr. Young’s work with their prestigious Health Award and granted him $75,000 to provide life-saving heart surgery for more than 250 children every year. “Some estimates show that 90% of children on the planet still do not have access to highly treatable childhood heart disease,” Dr. Young said. “We would like to try to make a difference for those children.”
Every donation made to World of Children Award through February 14 will support and advance Dr. Young’s vital work. Donations can be made at worldofchildren.org/valentinesday.
