In a study of email trends, DeskAlerts found that a staggering 89 billion business emails are sent every day. It cited the speed and low cost as possible reasons for this popularity, also noting that email technology is widespread meaning it can be used to reach a lot of people, set up meetings, share links and send attachments to recipients.
However, despite this proliferation of email culture throughout commercial organizations, the DeskAlerts team found a number of reasons for concern. In questioning whether email is the most appropriate and most valid form of communication given the sheer volume of people relying on the medium, it states that often, email senders can't expect a quick response from the recipient.
DeskAlerts also recognized that while emails are commonplace, they can also cause information overload with many suffering from overflowing inboxes. This can lead to less productivity and feelings of being overwhelmed by communication demands.
Finally, the DeskAlerts team hypothesizes that with such large volumes, email as a primary tool of communication could also pose a security risk thanks to the ease with which viruses can be attached to and embedded within messages. Clearly, the greater the volume of email sent and received, the higher the threat.
