CEO Julie Jakob Picks Up Boxing in Her 50s
Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) February 14, 2014 -- Most CEOs are primarily focused on maintaining their businesses and may not always have time for extraordinary extracurricular activities. That’s not the case for Julie Jakob, President and CEO of Jakob Marketing Partners. Julie is a member of the Women’s Philanthropic Network, Smart Women in Marketing, and Mountain West Capital Network. She is the soon-to-be President of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization Utah Chapter and she also donates time to various non-profit organizations. When Julie is not running her company, going to business meetings, or helping her community, she likes to box. Despite having a full schedule, and being in her 50s, Julie has been training in the boxing ring. While this is may be surprising to some, most of her friends and business colleagues know Julie is anything but ordinary.
When asked how boxing helps her in her daily life as a businesswoman, she replied, “Boxing shows me discipline, reminds me not to give up, and helps me focus on working hard.” That focus is paying off. Not only does Julie succeed in her business endeavors, she has made major strides in her boxing as well. Julie’s coach, Rob Scott of Legends Boxing in Lehi, Utah said, “Julie has been a machine. It’s rare to see someone with so much drive, work ethic, and just pure willingness to succeed. It’s a pleasure training her.”
Julie started boxing when her daughter expressed interest in it as an effective method of working out. It became a way for them to spend quality mother-daughter time together before her daughter went away to college. “Never in a million years would I have expected to take up such a seemingly male-dominated, aggressive sport as a 50+ woman,” she said.
Fitness classes like pilates, spin, or yoga have been consistently gaining in popularity over the last few years, but many women are afraid to attempt more vigorous activities like boxing or martial arts. They should not be. Julie recommends that any women, especially CEOs, who are interested in trying a fun and exciting new workout, take on the sport of boxing. She believes it is a great way to stay in shape, help build confidence, and challenge those who participate. “It’s actually fun. I definitely feel an immense sense of accomplishment, and it’s going beyond your comfort zone,” Julie said.
