Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-TMC Celebrates the Grand Opening of Center for Advanced Heart Failure
Houston, Texas (PRWEB) February 17, 2014 -- The Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute–Texas Medical Center (HVI-TMC) is proud to announce the grand opening of the new Center for Advanced Heart Failure (CAHF) to treat the most severe cases of heart disease and heart failure through a multidisciplinary and comprehensive team approach.
A joint collaboration between HVI-TMC and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, the Center offers the full continuum of heart and vascular care through advanced medical treatments, innovative technology and cutting-edge research, led by the top heart failure treatment experts in the field today.
The new space occupies 12,000 square feet on the 25th floor of the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza. It features state-of-the-art exam rooms, expanded registration areas and large procedure areas with specialized equipment to treat cardiovascular disease. It also includes four pods and 16 exam rooms, allowing for less wait time for patients and family members.
“As a clinical team, we already offer the best comprehensive care for heart failure treatment in Texas, focused on patient-centered care and the highest quality outcomes,” said Igor Gregoric, M.D., Chief and Program Director of the Surgical Division at the CAHF and professor at UTHealth. “This new space allows us to continue delivering that care in the best possible setting.”
In addition to Dr. Gregoric, the team at the new Center will include Biswajit Kar, M.D., Chief and Program Director of the Medical Division at the CAHF; Pranav Loyalka, M.D., Associate Chief of the Medical Division at the CAHF; Manish Patel, M.D., Associate Chief of the Surgical Division at the CAHF; Sriram S. Nathan, M.D., Director of Cardiogenic Shock for the CAHF; M. Hakan Akay, M.D., Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of Minimally-Invasive Cardiac Surgery at the CAHF; Jayesh Patel, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery and cardiovascular surgeon; Farshad Raissi, M.D., cardiologist; and Indranee Rajapreyar, M.D., cardiologist. The board certified, fellowship-trained physicians – who are all affiliated with UTHealth Medical School, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center’s academic partner – specialize in combining the latest technological advances with compassion and healing expertise.
The team is dedicated to improving the overall health and quality of life of the most critical patients through a comprehensive approach to heart failure prevention and treatment including the most innovative lifesaving treatments and complex surgeries available for advanced heart failure, from mechanical circulatory support therapies such as total artificial heart and left ventricular assist devices to heart transplantation.
In fact, the CAHF boasts one of the fastest growing heart transplant program in the country. “We have the biggest numbers with the best survival rates of anyone in the Texas Medical Center, a community that’s already breaking boundaries in the clinical field every day,” said Dr. Kar. “As of mid-February, we’ve completed 50 transplants. That’s more than anyone else in the past year.”
HVI-TMC has a long history of excellence in treating patients with cardiovascular disease. It has been accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA), in partnership with the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, as a STEMI (Heart Attack) Receiving Center and received the 2013 Mission: Lifeline® Gold Quality Achievement Award from AHA. In addition, the Institute earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its ventricular assisted device (VAD) destination therapy program by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety in disease-specific care. HVI-TMC also received approval from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as a Medicare-approved center for heart transplantation, meaning the program meets volume, survival outcomes and program standards that are required by CMS.
