For more than 60 years the Pinewood Derby® has been helping Cub Scouts build their skills and confidence, and this year the event got support from Biscoe Insurance Group. The company was there for the big race, which was held on January 18th at Pleasant Hill Elementary in Leander, TX. Cub Scouts woke up early to get their homemade pinewood derby cars lined up on the race start line.
This year’s racers joined the millions of other Cub Scouts that have built nearly 100 million pinewood derby cars since the race began in 1953. Partnered up with an adult, the Cub Scout must create a car that meets the weight and size specifications for the race. Many packs also require that scouts use the official BSA Grand Prix Pinewood Derby® kit, which includes all the necessary construction materials and gives scouts an equal chance of winning.
However, the event isn’t about winning for the scouts said Scott Biscoe, owner of Biscoe Insurance Group. “It’s about a feeling of accomplishment. The Cub Scout and their parent or mentor work together to design and build the derby car. It’s great to see the kids take such pride in building something from scratch. Getting to race it is a bonus.”
During the derby, scouts race in heats of 2-4 cars on a downhill track using nothing but gravity to propel the car. Ribbons and trophies are awarded during the event. Awards categories for the local race included:
