GridEdge Networks Inc., announces the commercial availability of a new grid protection system for distributed generation facilities.

GridEdge Networks Inc., a provider of advanced smart grid communications solutions announced today the successful conclusion of a Research and Development project to create a grid protection system for Transfer Trip Distributed Generation Protection systems. This R&D project was completed in partnership with Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECO), a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities.

This announcement culminates two years of joint venture development and testing resulting in a successful Transfer Trip deployment in Springfield, MA. The Power Line Communications (PLC) technology has been specifically customized for this application to provide a sustainable and cost effective solution for the necessary protection of the distributed generation facility.

The Distributed Generation Transfer Trip Protection (DG-TTP) system is required for most utility scale energy generators (e.g. solar, wind) that directly attach to the distribution grid. The PLC option provides state of the art grid protection in situations of unintentional islanding, by detecting the islanding condition and disconnecting the energy generation facility within two seconds as required by the criteria established in the IEEE-1547 regulatory standard.

The major benefit of this PLC solution to a utility and its distributed generation customers is the relatively low life cycle costs and its fast installation process. Further, the PLC technology can be installed on the existing energized primary lines and requires minimal ongoing maintenance and helps in reducing the utility’s operating costs.

Nachum Sadan, President & CEO of GridEdge Networks, stated: “We are very pleased to have been selected by WMECO and NU to provide a solution for their distributed generation integration needs. DG-TTP fills a real need in a new and fast growing market, and will be beneficial to other utilities as well. I believe the low cost and ease of installation will enable more renewable energy generation projects to be completed.”

Mr. Sadan presented the DG-TTP project at the annual Distributech 2014 utility trade show in San Antonio on January 30.

GridEdge Networks is launching the DG-TTP product this month.
