FNU Conquistadors First Year Sets the Stage for Continuous Growth
Miami, FL (PRWEB) February 19, 2014 -- Acknowledging the prominence of Florida National University (FNU), the university’s introduction of an Athletic Department has proven to be successful in more ways than one. Modeled as an example on how the university continuously works towards enriching the quality of its students’ education, the FNU Conquistadors first season has left a significant impression on FNU’s Athletic Department, administrative team, student body and the community at large.
“Our initial goal was and is to obviously win as many games as possible, but our long term and primary goal is to impact as many young men and women’s lives as possible,” says Scott Schmidt, Florida National University Athletic Director and Head Coach. “Creating athletics is more than just having sports; it’s about creating a culture of visibility, awareness, community outreach and service. We want to raise awareness that the student athletes of FNU will leave as well-rounded human beings, having learned various life skills through the implementation of sport within an educational setting.”
Conjured by a community of involved students, the team name, Conquistadors, embodies the values, culture and rich Latin heritage of Florida National University. Giving students the chance to contribute to the final name of the FNU’s first athletic team signifies the university’s emphasis on commemorating the roles of its students.
Entering the last game of the season with a record of 10-17, the team’s progress is characterized by its ability to work together and grow as an entity. Due to the fact that the Conquistadors were in so many late game situations, each player had to adapt to certain roles, which, in turn, expedited the maturation process of the team and each individual.
To demonstrate how far the Conquistadors came in just one season, the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) denoted the following highlights:
• Points Per Game
Quantavis Hall- 5th - 19.6 ppg
• Rebounds Per game
Yves Goedschalk-3rd-10.2 rpg
• Assists Per Game
Quantavis Hall- 1st-7.5 apg
• 3-Pt Percentage
Bruce “Evan” Moorman-3rd-45.5
