How will your child spend their time during their summer camp days?
Will there be a structured routine and curriculum?
Will it be a free for all?
It is a proven fact that children can lose up to 8 weeks of learning during the summer months. You have heard the old saying “You will lose it if you do not use it.” So the question you need to ask yourself is what are you doing and what is the camp they are attending doing to help assist your child in maintaining their level of education during the summer months.
Make sure that the camp has a structured curriculum, not a free for all attitude. Make sure they are reading every day and not playing video games for 4-6 hours per day. (This is the Day Care’s way of keeping your child entertained). It sounds great to the child, not great for you or them at the end of the day.
Every day there should be a routine that is followed. Children actually love routines. It provides them with the information necessary to provide them security and comfort in knowing what is going, when it will be happening, how it will happen and what the expectations are for them.
Master Schill warns parents when enrolling their children into camps that do not have structured routines and curriculums. Children function and develop more efficiently in structured environments. Enrolling them in a camp or day care that is unorganized provides an environment of chaos and uncertainty. This leads to a feeling of insecurity and helplessness. When children feel insecure, they typically act out in a negative manner. Since most children are unable to properly express themselves verbally, when their frustration level peaks, they act out.
Master Schill wrote a summer camp guide for parents outlining the top ten secrets most summer camp programs do not want you to know. The name of the book, “Warning, Discover the Number 1 Thing Most Summer Camp Programs do not want you to know.”
