The first implementation of Mimosa’s 802.11ac technology will enable Airspan’s “Fat Pipe, Strong Pipe” solution, which augments the iBridge small cell licensed backhaul interface (“Strong Pipe”) with Mimosa’s unlicensed backhaul technology (“Fat Pipe”). This unique product combination will be the first fully-integrated licensed and unlicensed backhaul offering packaged into a compact LTE small cell product. “Fat Pipe, Strong Pipe” benefits networks by creating the ability to rapidly deploy 5 GHz spectrum for additional system capacity at the lowest possible total cost of ownership.

Airspan’s iBridge supports the “Fat Pipe, Strong Pipe” solution with SDN (Software Defined Networking). The iBridge SDN uses real-time traffic routing for dynamic selection of licensed or unlicensed radio paths. Leveraging unlicensed backhaul for non-critical data offload optimizes the availability of licensed spectrum for critical traffic.
An additional benefit of the “Fat Pipe, Strong Pipe” solution is the use of dynamic antenna directionality for intelligent self-organization, reducing ongoing system maintenance and enabling faster deployment and installation. Mimosa’s 4-stream capable MIMO radio enables self-organization of the ‘Fat Pipe,’ operating over bandwidths of up to 80 MHz, and at modulation rates up to 256 QAM. This technology delivers a data capacity not possible with competitive technologies, while realizing the operational savings of self-organization.
It is critical that any licensed/unlicensed backhaul integrate closely to maintain overall system reliability and interference mitigation.
