During the recent ice storm that severely impacted the Southeast, authorities and operators of digital billboards along major highways cooperated to display up-to-the-minute advisory warnings for commuters. The Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia worked with digital billboard manufacturer Formetco, Incorporated, emergency and transportation agencies to provide billboard operators with live feeds of important information for the duration of the storm in a coordinated effort to help ensure the safety of everyone on the road. The advisories were displayed for the duration of the storm.
Governor Deal of Georgia recognized the value of digital billboard technology as a public service tool when he personally thanked billboard operators across the state for working swiftly to disseminate critical information.
It is becoming increasingly clear that digital billboard technology serves a far greater purpose than simply presenting advertisements, reducing the industry’s environmental impact, and providing entertainment to the public. The medium’s flexibility and speed provide a unique opportunity for governments and agencies to broadcast important information to millions of commuters at a moment’s notice, helping to mitigate damage and potentially save lives.
