LMU Receives SACS Approval for College of Veterinary Medicine
Harrogate, TN (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 -- The Commission on Colleges (COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) notified Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) that it has approved the LMU-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM).
“Reaching this point in the development of our College of Veterinary Medicine is a landmark day for this institution and it demonstrates the investments the University, its faculty, staff and trustees have made in expanding the educational opportunities for the people of Appalachia,” said LMU President B. James Dawson. “This milestone also highlights LMU’s academic integrity, rigor and standards.”
Approval by SACS clears the way for LMU to enroll students in the program in advance of the August 2014 launch date. LMU received a Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education(AVMA COE) in July 2013. The AVMA-COE will monitor the progress of the CVM with periodic reports and site visits.
LMU-CVM’s curriculum will be delivered in the state-of-the-art Hamilton Math and Science building as well as the LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine building. Additionally, LMU has received a grant in excess of $1 million from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission to help fund construction of the Large Animal Teaching and Research Center (LATRC). Construction is underway in Lee County, Va. The LATRC will play a central role in the education of LMU-CVM students.
Concurrent with the growth in enrollment and in keeping with its mission, LMU has significantly expanded its traditionally strong faculty and staff and continues to recruit a diverse group of highly qualified professionals, as it continues to grow and become more research-focused. In eight years the number of terminally degreed faculty members has more than doubled. In 2006, the year prior to LMU-DCOM opening, there were 73 terminally degreed faculty members and today there are 191. This trend will only increase with the addition of another professional degree program.
The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is the recognized regional accrediting body in the eleven U.S. Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia) and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degrees. The Commission on Colleges is the representative body of the College Delegate Assembly and is charged with carrying out the accreditation process. The AVMA COE accredits DVM or equivalent educational programs. AVMA COE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as the accrediting body for schools and programs that offer the professional DVM degree in the United States.
