Who is Lionel?
Lionel’s success story is one for the books. He was born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama within a small and at that time, still isolated African American community. He comes from a line of musicians and military men. His mother was an English teacher and this is why Lionel grew up a stickler for proper grammar. He has one sister, Deborah, who chose to further a career in education. As a young man, Lionel’s interest was tennis and music. He first joined a campus group called The Mystics. This group was later known as The Commodores.
Later on, Lionel Richie, vocalist, pianist, and saxophonist became a songwriter to many other talented contemporaries. He wrote and sang “Endless Love” with dear friend and superstar, Diana Ross. He earned an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Say You, Say Me. His “Dancing On The Ceiling” released in 1986 became a pop and R&B classic. “We Are The World”, which he co-wrote with King of Pop, Michael Jackson, is now considered a classic.
Modern Times
Lionel is one of the most respected names in the industry and his influence was once again seen when he became one of the celebrity judges on “American Idol.”
His eighth studio album entitled “Coming Home” was released in September 2006. The carrier single “I Call It Love” became his biggest hit in the U.S. in ten years. He continued to produce music and set up International tours. He goes to Asia, Australia, Africa, the UK, Europe, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia – where he is being received by a warm audience.
