Burnett, Hancock Form Capitol Strategies; Register 18 New Clients
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) February 25, 2014 -- Capitol Strategies Partners LLC (“Capitol Strategies”), a newly-formed government affairs firm, announced the registration of 18 new clients today.
Capitol Strategies is a bi-partisan, bi-cameral firm with deep roots in the Pacific Northwest and strong ties to the Defense, Transportation and Energy industries.
Shay Hancock and Wally Burnett founded the firm in January 2014 after the closing of Denny Miller Associates last December. Prior to founding the firm, Hancock served 7 years as a Senior Vice President and Burnett 11 years as Chief Operating Officer of Denny Miller Associates.
“When we decided to form Capitol Strategies, we wanted to create a new model for government relations that adapts to the changing culture in our nation’s capital”, said Shay Hancock, Managing Partner at Capitol Strategies. “Big ideas deserve a great plan, and even better execution. In today’s Washington, DC it is not enough to be right, you have to know how to win. The Capitol Strategies model brings the expertise of our entire team to service every client, allowing for out-of-the-box thinking and a relentless effort to achieve our clients’ goals.”
During his over-a-decade tenure on Capitol Hill, Hancock served as a Legislative Assistant to Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), currently the fourth ranking member of the Senate Democratic leadership, Budget Committee Chair and senior member of the Senate Committees on Appropriations and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. He earlier worked for Representative Adam Smith (D-WA), the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. In addition to his 10 years of government relations consulting experience, Hancock also spent time as an Assistant Vice President for a Fortune 100 company.
Wally Burnett previously served Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) and Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) as the Staff Director for the Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee. Before his tenure on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Burnett served in the Department of the Navy as an Assistant General Counsel for Financial Management and Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy; and in the Department of Transportation as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Budget and Programs and Special Assistant to the Secretary for Strategic Planning.
Wally Burnett added “Everyone at Capitol Strategies comes with different strengths, from both sides of the aisle and from the various wings of each party, from appropriations to tax and select areas of expertise in between. Our team aggressively attacks our clients’ challenges from the range of perspectives that comes from growing up in different decades and different political experiences.”
Joining Hancock and Burnett at Capitol Strategies are Tim Lovain and Chris Miller, both formerly with Denny Miller Associates.
Tim Lovain, Executive Vice President at Capitol Strategies, previously served as Vice President and General Counsel at Denny Miller Associates for 29 years. In addition, he has served for four years as a Member of the Alexandria, VA City Council (2006-2009, 2013-present). Lovain leads Capitol Strategies’ representation of several public sector transportation clients.
Chris Miller, Executive Vice President at Capitol Strategies, spent 3 years at Denny Miller Associates and currently leads the team on energy and resources related issues. Miller previously spent a decade on Capitol Hill – in both the House and the Senate. Most recently, he served as Chief of Staff to Representative Dave Reichert (R-WA). Miller began his career with Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Senator Tim Hutchinson (R-AR), before serving as Legislative Assistant to Representative Jennifer Dunn (R-WA) and Senior Legislative Assistant to Representative Gary Miller (R-CA).
Rounding out the team at Capitol Strategies is Sandy Mathiesen, who joined the new firm as a Senior Advisor. Mathiesen served at Denny Miller Associates for 19 years and has advocated on behalf of both nonprofit and for-profit entities primarily in the health care, education and energy sectors. She previously served as a legislative aide to Representative Thomas S. Foley (D-WA), former Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
