Current Roaming Costs Not Aiding The Always-Connected Consumer/Driver
Telematics Update: In the era of the ‘Internet of Things’, 24-hour connectedness and high-speed connectivity, it seems absurd that 94 percent of Europeans who travel outside their home country limit their use of data services because of mobile roaming charges (according to a survey of 28,000 people by the European Commission). Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice President said, “I am honestly shocked by these figures. Consumers are limiting their phone use in extreme ways and this makes no sense for the companies either.” It is clear that automakers, mobile network operators and the authorities need to come together to solve this impasse that has the potential to slow the growth of the connected car in Europe. This very pressing topic will be discussed in depth at the Content and Apps for Automotive 2014 Conference in Munich in April (8-9).
Having read the figures released by the European Commission, Gareth Ragg, Project Director at Telematics Update commented, “What concerns me the most is that only 1 out of 10 consumers would use e-mails in the same way as at home and only 1 out of 20 would use social media in the same way as at home. Consumers need to be encouraged, rather than put off using services on their mobile and in their car when outside their country of origin. I’m looking forward to hearing what the OEMs have to say on this issue– it really is stunting their connected car/4G LTE visions. The likes of Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and Kia will weigh in on this topic at Content and Apps for Automotive Europe Conference and Exhibition 2014 in Munich (Hotel Kempinski) this April (8-9).”
