Walking can increase brain size; Your Lifestyle Products comment on the article
Gatwick, Surrey (PRWEB UK) 25 February 2014 -- The typical benefits of walking include fresh air and scenery, but latest research has found that an energetic stroll three times a week increases the size of the hippocampus reports Daily Mail on 18th February 2014. This is the brain’s memory hub, which is one of the first area that is affected by Alzheimer’s disease (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2561708/Taking-walk-makes-brain-grow-Energetic-stroll-three-times-week-increase-size-organs-memory-hub.html).
The study involved 120 men and women between the ages of 55 and 80 to take a 40 minute brisk walk three times a week. After a year, brain scans revealed that the hippocampus had grown by up to 2 per cent. According to Dr Kirk Erickson, lead researched from the University of Pittsburgh, “You don’t need highly vigorous physical activity to see these effects. This may sound like it is a modest amount but it’s like reversing the age clock by a couple of years.”
Dr Erickson stated that although exercise is not the absolute cure to fighting dementia, it is the best way to keeping the mind sharp. Physical activity and puzzles are beneficial to improving mental health.
Your Lifestyle Products commented on this article as follows. “This recent finding is really important for overall health. With an increasing elderly population suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, to have identified something as simple as walking as a way to prevent it is really exciting.”
They go on to say, “Walking is great exercise and can be beneficial for overall wellbeing: physically, physiologically and psychologically.”
