Port Jefferson, NY (PRWEB) April 01, 2014 -- Dr. Jennifer Serrentino, a Board Certified Psychiatrist with over fourteen years in practice, is pleased to announce her participation as a trainer during the Opioid Overdose Responder Training in conjunction with Hope House Ministries. As the world continues to deal with the curse of addiction to controlled substances, heroin has become the drug of choice for many and has become a cheap option for many who abuse prescription opioids. The hidden toll of heroin addiction is usually not a topic of news reports when the victim is a not a celebrity, as many opioid addicts are members of our own communities.
On Long Island alone, heroin use has exploded as a problem, Since early 2013, Dr. Serrentino has worked in conjunction with Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW, James Murdocco, BSc and the Port Jefferson EMS to provide training for people so that they can recognize and help provide immediate treatment to people suffering an opioid overdose. In that time, over 150 individuals have been trained and certified as Trained Overdose Responders. These certified responders are trained in the assembly and use of Narcan devices as well as in rescue breathing techniques. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, in recognition of the important training that is being provided, has prominently listed announcements for each of the training classes that have been given and continue to do so.
