Thornton Creek Elementary School fourth graders and residents of retirement community Ida Culver House Ravenna are teaming up for monthly, shared learning lessons that connect the generations through reading, art and culture.

February’s lesson included local “Use Your Noodle Doodle!” Author, Sheri Page and book Illustrator, Jennifer Frohwerk who visited with the students and seniors at Ida Culver House for a very special reading.

“A reading from Sheri Page, ideas about drawing and painting from Jennifer Frohwerk and encouragement from older people help our students stay passionate about reading,” said Thornton Creek Elementary Fourth Grade Instructor, Sandra Brettler.

Ida Culver House Ravenna is currently hosting an exhibit of Frohwerk’s artwork that the students toured. Through the experience, they learned about the drawing and painting processes.

Page and Frohwerk held a question and answer session with the fourth graders and residents of Ida Culver House Ravenna. Interest in writing and drawing was high, but Bode, the golden doodle that inspired the book stole the show.

"This collaboration is one of our best yet because Ida Culver House residents get to see how much they help kids in our neighborhood by encouraging active learning," said Ida Culver House Ravenna Executive Director, Sheryl Arena. "In turn, our resident take an interest in the process of learning and what inspires it. This often includes exploration of music, art and culture which they share with the children and their friends."
