Dr Tariq Drabu Warns of The Future Problems of Increasing Dental Student Debt in the UK
(PRWEB) March 06, 2014 -- Dr Tariq Drabu is the highly respected and successful Manchester dentist. He is the owner of the Langley Dental Practice in Middleton, Manchester. In addition, he is the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and treatment Services for NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. As well as running a busy family practice, he is a highly respected teacher of post graduate students. As a result, he understands the financial difficulties that many British dental students are experiencing.
Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking from Manchester recently. He was referring to an article which was published by the Dentist website. The article, which can be read in full here, highlights the shocking levels of debt many students are experiencing as a result of studying dentistry. The research reveals that many students could be in debt by as much as £60k upon graduating.
Dr Tariq Drabu, Manchester dentist, said, “Students who commenced studies during academic year 2013-14 could be facing huge debts as a result of their chosen field of study. This is an extremely alarming statistic and I am concerned that it will put off many young people from less affluent backgrounds that would otherwise choose dentistry as their profession. We have already seen authorities reduce the number of places. This level of debt will surely put many young students off.”
Dr Tariq Drabu, speaking from his Manchester practice continued, “The study revealed that last year, students in the final year had an average debt of £24,724! And the study also revealed a high percentage of students experiencing financial difficulties while they were studying. Many of them experienced serious financial shortfalls in funding during their last year of study – a most pivotal time for them. I am sure these findings are accurate. I have seen the difficulties students have to deal with first hand. As a post graduate teacher, I am only too aware of the financial burdens our students, and in some cases their parents, have to shoulder. Financial worries and stresses can also make it much a harder to focus on studies and learning. This is not how we should be treating the next generation of British Dentists!”
Dr Tariq Drabu, leading Manchester dentist closed by saying, “The article points out that students due to finish their degrees in 2018/19 could be facing debts of at least 38k after they complete their five year course. Tuition fees have been set at 9k, and the cost of living is set to rise over the next five years too. This should be a concern for the entire dental profession, not just students and teachers. It is vital we do all we can to address this or we will see a huge and dangerous drop in the intake of students, and in the number successfully graduating. I have discussed this with many of my students and the levels of debt they will incur during their studies is a genuine concern for them, and their families. It adds a level of stress to their student lives that they do not deserve and should not be subjected to.”
