The biggest impediment to FDA approval of cannabinoids is the federal government's characterization of it as a schedule 1 controlled substance with no medical value.

In a surprising turn of events, parents are lobbying the Illinois state legislature to allow medical marijuana supplements to be available to children. This is in the wake of findings that cannabis oil extract can be used to effectively treat pediatric cases of epilepsy. Although Illinois is one of 20 states that currently allows medical marijuana, its regulations are very specific and only permit those over the age of 18 to seek marijuana as a medical treatment.

The challenge to this law are based on the emergence of cannabinoids, a cannabis oil extract that the parents contend should be excepted from the 18-and-over regulation. Opponents of the measure cite the lack of rigorous testing to approve and worry that dosing children with unapproved medicine may do more harm than good. Many others are preaching a wait-and-see policy while more scientific trials are conducted, but this is problematic for those parents with children suffering from sever epilepsy. A company spokesperson for AA Global Imports believes that this is the heart of the issue: "Children with these debilitating conditions cannot live normal lives because of the infirmity that they live with on a daily basis. They should have access to any and all treatments that are proven to help their conditions."

AA Packaging comments that it is unethical to ask parents to wait for additional rounds of trials when the approving entities are often the ones standing in the way of more research. "The biggest impediment to FDA approval of cannabinoids is the federal government's characterization of it as a schedule 1 controlled substance with no medical value. This precludes the more rigorous testing that would be required for FDA approval. We support the rights of parents to chose natural, healthy treatments that can help children to recover from these terrible conditions."
