AllCar Rent-A-Car revealed this morning that they had sponsored the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Youth Corps annual trip to Long Island’s Fire, Rescue and EMS Mega Show over the past weekend. The show, which hosts hundreds of vendors from the fields of fire and rescue, is one of the top trade shows in the industry and a valuable source of learning for emergency medical service providers on the east coast.
“These kids are the future of fire and rescue in Queens,” explained Rego Park AllCar Rent-A-Car manager Alex Rosenthal. “We’re honored to have been able to play a small role in this exciting experience.” Rosenthal’s branch provided the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Youth Corps with a gratis 15 passenger van for transportation to and from the event.
A common figure in the Queens community, the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Youth Corps is comprised of children ages 14-17. While enrolled in the program, these youngsters are exposed to a variety of emergency medical services, having the opportunity to dispatch, administer First Aid and participate in organized community events like street fairs and festivals. They also help stock emergency response vehicles with appropriate medical supplies and equipment.
The Youth Corps recent trip to Long Island’s Fire, Rescue and EMS Mega Show gave the kids the opportunity to mingle with hundreds of emergency services personnel from many different agencies and municipalities. “The kids were awed when they stepped into the coliseum. The fight of flashing emergency lights, the smell of new ambulances… it kept smiles on the kids faces throughout the entire event,” recalled Alan Wolfe, a member of the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps that accompanied the kids to the event.
Vendors at the event included ambulance and emergency vehicle dealers, emergency lighting providers, medical equipment and supplies vendors, and collectible dealers. Hosted by Long Island Productions, the event attracts thousands of participants every year.
When asked about their favorite part of the event, most participants agreed it involved “driving” the ambulance simulator. “The simulator gave them a taste of driving an emergency vehicle with lights and a siren,” explained Wolfe. “All in all, much fun and enjoyment was had.”
