fenix 2 is the newly announced GPS watch for everything outdoors which competes favorably with many triathlon and multi-sports watches according to the Heart Rate Watch Company.
"A lot of people want to know how favorably Garmin fenix 2 compares with the Suunto Ambit 2 and the answer is very favorably", says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "It has more advanced running features, newly added swim features and probably only lags the Ambit 2 slightly in terms of ease of navigation".
Battery Life and Connected Features
Battery life is equivalent on the two watches at about 15 hours at one second recording and up to 45 hours at one minute, according to Squire. "Garmin fenix 2 has Bluetooth Smart and can receive text messages on screen from an iPhone 4S or later model", says Squire.
Navigation and Waypoints
Both watches have trackback and other advanced navigation features including 3-D compasses, barometric altimeters and waypoints, but the fenix 2 has 1,000 waypoints while the Ambit 2 does 100. "The big decision here is if navigation is a high priority then the fenix 2 is likely the better choice".
Garmin fenix 2 Performer Bundle has the best running features but Suunto Ambit 2 has the ability to run apps fro more sports according to Squire. "Both watches have excellent advanced training features so that is a draw in my mind, except for the running features and there, as we've said, the fenix 2 wins", says Squire.
Availability and Pricing
Garmin fenix 2 sells for $399.99 without heart rate and for $449.99 in the Performer bundle with the new HRM-Run strap. "We definitely recommend people get the Performer bundle because it adds, VO2 max, recovery times, run oscillation, ground contact time and loads of advanced data", says Squire. He adds, "The strap is $99 separately".
