ENER-G welcomes Ofgem plan to clamp down on rogue energy brokers
Studley, Warwickshire (PRWEB UK) 28 February 2014 -- Business energy broker ENER-G Procurement has welcomed energy regulator Ofgem's proposals to eliminate rogue brokers and restore consumer confidence in the market.
ENER-G was actively involved in the Ofgem Third Party Intermediary (TPI) working group – which was called to address key concerns raised in the recent Retail Market Review, including the development and discussion around a new industry-wide Code of Practice for TPIs.
Mark Alston, Director of ENER-G Procurement, said: "A minority of unscrupulous brokers give the majority of professional third party intermediaries a bad name. We welcome Ofgem's proposal to mandate Energy Suppliers to work only with accredited TPI’s and are keen to play an active role in raising industry standards. There is an existing code of practice developed by the Utilities Intermediaries Association (UIA), which we adhere to, and which is closely aligned to Ofgem’s proposed new code."
He added: "We have resorted to supplying our customers with a Unique Broker Identification Number to combat sharp practice by 'cowboy' brokers, which helps verify that we are their legitimate representative."
Ofgem proposals would require energy suppliers to work only with brokers adhering to the code, and would require complete transparency by TPIs as to business fees, contracts offered and suppliers they represent. The new code and regulation for suppliers is intended to be introduced by the end of the year.
ENER-G has published a guide to help organisations understand utility costs and seek greater transparency, called 'How to Read Your Energy Bill'.
