Police have released CCTV images of a man after an attempted armed robbery at the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society in Werrington, Peterborough Today reports. The incident, which occurred on February 5th, saw an individual wearing a balaclava enter the bank shortly before 5pm armed with a knife. After demanding money from staff members, a member of staff triggered security screens after seeing the incident on the bank’s CCTV system. It’s reported that no one was hurt during the incident, but staff members are said to be shaken. Detectives describe the individual seen in CCTV as wearing a hooded grey top and one black and one yellow glove, whilst holding a shopping bag.
Peterborough Today reports that this incident isn’t the first to have occurred recently at the bank in Werrington. A separate incident on 16th October 2013 saw a man leaving the premises with a handful of money after he reportedly jumped over the counter.
As experts in business security systems, AlertSystems closely follow news relating to CCTV. The team were interested in the release of these CCTV images and a company representative offered their comments:
“Armed robberies can be a terrifying experience for members of staff and the unpredictable nature of the crime means it’s important to have CCTV security systems in place to protect customers and members of staff. As in this incident, CCTV can be used by members of staff to monitor the store and prevent an incident. However if an incident does occur, detectives can use the footage to further their enquiries and draw their investigations to successful conclusions.
For businesses which hold large sums of money or items of high value, it’s important to have CCTV security systems in place. Not only can the CCTV camera act as an effective crime preventative, but high quality footage can be used to bring those responsible for an incident to justice.”
