Greenville car accident law firm Standeffer & Harbin warns motorists to use caution as their investigations of recent South Carolina auto accidents reveal nearly 1,000 motor vehicle collisions caused by snow, sleet and icy road conditions between Jan. 29, 2014 and Feb. 14, 2014.
A compilation of reports from Yahoo, Google and local newspapers published on Feb. 26 by navbug.com were analyzed between the time period of late January and mid-February when winter storms hit the North and Southeastern United States. Within a 24-hour time period on Jan. 29, 2014, the South Carolina Highway Patrol had responded to nearly 820 car collisions.
On Feb. 12, 2013, when winter storm Pax passed through the Southeast, an additional 178 collisions were reported. During this time period 276 motorists were abandoned, and 61 vehicles were found abandoned. Additionally, nearly 1,500 Department of Transportation workers worked around the clock during the winter storms to de-ice roads with more than 11,000 tons of salt.
Prior to winter storm Pax, Gov. Nikky Haley requested that South Carolina be declared a disaster area as the previous storm had left hundreds of residents and businesses without power. Following winter storm Pax, news outlets reported that, during its peak, the power outage left 350,000 people without electricity.
According to accuweather.com the transition into spring will be slow as cold, wet and stormy weather is expected to continue in the South.
