Clayton Homes, America’s largest home builder*, has released a quick checklist to help homebuyers decide if they are ready for homeownership. Many families consider owning a home a big part of achieving the "American Dream," and they want to feel secure in their decision before moving forward with the process. Clayton Homes has shared a Buyer’s Guide to Homeownership: Steps for Being Prepared to present new homebuyers with practical guidelines to help them during this exciting time in their lives.

Potential buyers should consider the following checklist of questions when considering the purchase of a home.

□    Do I plan to live in the same area for a few years?
Buying means being able to stay in one home for as long as you like, without worrying about leases and landlords. However, it \ also limits mobility.

□    Can I afford the home I want?
Talking to a lender will help you figure out what you can comfortably finance. This number is based on monthly income, debt ratio and other factors.

□    How expensive will my homeowner’s insurance be?
An insurance company can help determine this cost. Talking with a company you have other policies through, such as car insurance, may help you qualify for a multi-line discount by packaging policies together.

□    What will my property tax be?
Property taxes vary by city, state and country, so it’s a good idea to discuss these costs with a lender.

□    How much will I pay for utilities in my new home?
Utility costs can vary greatly depending on several factors, such as the age of the home and its level of energy efficiency. It is important to keep this in mind when home shopping.

“One of the most exciting times in a person’s life is when it is time to purchase a new home,” said Kevin Clayton, CEO of Clayton Homes. “We want to help families enjoy time together in a place they can call their own, and this detailed Buyer’s Guide to Home ownership will help people navigate the home-buying process with ease.”
