Film Introduces Renowned Indian Star Piyush Mishra to the U.S.

…nice moments of honesty

House Lights Media (HLM) has acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights to THE PLAYBACK SINGER, written and directed by Suju Vijayan. This charming and insightful relationship tale has enjoyed success on the U.S. film festival circuit and is now looking to continue its accomplishments with a VOD, Broadband and DVD release this summer. It stars American actress Navi Rawat (The House of Sand and Fog, Numb3rs, The O.C.), Ross Partridge (Baghead, The Freebie) and introduces award winning, veteran Indian actor, Piyush Mishra, to a broader international audience.

House Lights Media will slate release of the multiple award-winning festival hit on DVD and Electronic Delivery as well as VOD as they bring this funny and creative independent film to the US and Canada this summer.

The Playback Singer tells the story of Ray, (Ross Partridge) an aimless, would-be jungle-gym architect, and his wife, grounded lawyer Priya (Navi Rawat), who find their lives disrupted - and their marriage upended - when Priya’s estranged father, Ashok (Piyush Mishra), comes to visit them from India. Ashok - a washed up “playback singer” who has spent his life singing for Bollywood films while divorcing several wives and ignoring his only child - stays with the couple as he invests in and embarks on what turns out to be a scam singing tour of the United States. Eventually, Ashok realizes he needs to help Ray so he can be the husband Ashok never was. The Playback Singer was deemed, “a wonderfully moving and funny film for you to put on your must-see lists” by film blogger Gadi Elkon and “both rewarding and funny” by Richard Von Busack of Metro Silicon Valley.

The deal was negotiated by Steve Roberts, President, and Sandy Moore, Senior Vice President, Acquisitions, Operations and Marketing, of House Lights Media, and Glen Reynolds, CEO of Circus Road Films, on behalf of Emmy Award Nominees, Writer/Director, Suju Vijayan, and Producer, Mike Blum, of Blumayan Films.

“The Playback Singer is a great addition to HLM’s repertoire of releases,” said Roberts, “we are always happy to launch quality independent films such as this one, across the various platforms, and believe it will resonate with a wide audience.”

“What a wonderful film that delves into the true humanity of family relationships. Father and daughter, husband and wife, as well as son-in-law and father-in-law and the competition of being in certain roles and vying for newly defined roles,” Moore enthused, “I’m so excited to be able to introduce this story.”

Recent House Lights Media titles include the theatrical releases of romantic comedy, LANGUAGE OF A BROKEN HEART, starring Tony Winner, Julie White, and rollicking musical comedy, PICKIN’ & GRINNIN’ featuring Kenny Loggins and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.
