Berri Products LLC Supplies Black Raspberries for Ohio State Clinical Candies
Portland, OR (PRWEB) March 06, 2014 -- Berri Products LLC, a leader in providing high-quality black raspberry products to clinical trials and directly to consumers, has supplied black raspberry powder to Ohio State University, where a team of food scientists used it to make black raspberry candies for use in clinical trials at Ohio State's Arthur G. James Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Yael Vodovotz, PhD, a food scientist with The Ohio State University Department of Food Science and Technology, was challenged by researchers to create superfood-based products that could be used in their clinical trials. The products needed to retain high levels of bio-actives, be easy to store and use, and be available year-round.
To meet this challenge, the team at Ohio State University produced black raspberry gummy candies, and a concentrated fruit nectar. The candy and nectar were formulated using freeze-dried black raspberry powder supplied by Berri Products LLC. The company works directly with their partner farm to produce quality berries, and then uses the whole berry when making their powder, including the seeds and fiber. The ability of Berri Products to deliver a high-quality black raspberry powder using the whole berry allowed for researchers to better capture all of the nutrients of the berry in their formulations.
The black raspberry, grown primarily in Oregon, is prized by researchers for its high levels of anthocyanins and polyphenols. According to the Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science, "(black raspberries) have distinct antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that appear to inhibit tumor growth."
Berri Products uses specialty black raspberries farmed by their partner Don Sturm on his family farm, perched above the stunning Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. His sustainable growing and harvesting methods have been finely tuned to maximize the quality of the berries he picks. Berri Products black raspberries have been widely studied in clinical trials and in cancer and inflammatory disease research.

About Berri Products LLC and BerriHealth
Berri Products was founded in 2009 by Steve Dunfield when he teamed up with leading researcher Gary Stoner Phd, Emeritus Professor Ohio State University, and third generation farmer Don Sturm of Sturm’s Berry Farms. This unique combination of skill and knowledge was used to create a black raspberry powder that is used by medical research universities across the United States to advance clinical research in many fields.
Berri Products has now made the same berry powders and extracts available directly to customers through their website, http://www.berrihealth.com, and has continued to innovate with new products using the black raspberry. Through their partnership with Sturm’s Berry Farm, the company has also started exploring the use of other quality berries to create signature powder blends.
