The incidence of counterfeit goods entering the food and consumer packaged goods supply chain is growing in frequency. The financial and reputational risks faced by retailers and CPG manufacturers from the introduction of counterfeit goods into supply chains are significant. As supply chains become increasingly complex, counterfeit goods will only become more difficult to detect, prevent and remove from the legitimate supply chain.
The Trading Partner Alliance of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) engaged Inmar and Authentix to produce “Brand Protection and Supply Chain Integrity: Methods for Counterfeit Detection, Prevention and Deterrence – A Best Practices Guide.” Based on surveys and interviews with manufacturers and retailers as well as industry experts, it presents best practices that could be employed to mitigate the risk of counterfeit product from entering the supply chain.
The best practices were developed by looking at the points within the legitimate supply chain and identifying where it is vulnerable to counterfeit product entering and becoming mixed with legitimate product. The best practices offer guidance to detect, prevent and deter counterfeit throughout the supply chain, from source products for manufacture to retail shelf and to post-counterfeit discovery. The guide also includes a “Risk Assessment Tool” to help manufacturers and retailers determine the ROI for their brand protection efforts. Benchmarking is also provided so manufacturers and retailers can compare efforts and policies to others within the CPG industry.
