POLAREXPLORERS Shackleton Crossing of South Georgia Island Honored by OUTSIDE Travel Awards 2014
Wilmette, IL (PRWEB) March 10, 2014 -- “We are delighted that our Shackleton Crossing on South Georgia Island has received this prestigious recognition. This trip celebrates all adventurers, both past and present, following in the icy footprints of Shackleton and his crew and sharing their amazing journey of survival. Shackleton is one of the true heroes of the Polar regions and we’re happy to share a portion of his experience with today’s intrepid adventurers,” Rick Sweitzer, PolarExplorers founder, stated.
“Here at PolarExplorers, the Shackleton experience we offer is one of our proudest achievements in our quest to bring a taste of great adventure to today’s travelers,” Annie Aggens, Director of Polar Operations for PolarExplorers, commented. “Shackleton was a brilliant leader and we’re delighted that this award focuses attention on his achievement in the southern Polar regions, as well as our commemorative trip.”
“Whether you’re looking to go big for an expedition, splurge on a luxurious paradise, or plan an epic family trip, OUTSIDE has unearthed fifty travel gems that will inspire you to renew that passport,” said OUTSIDE Editor Chris Keyes.
More About the Shackleton Crossing Adventure from PolarExplorers
The Shackleton Crossing Adventure lets participants walk – and climb -- in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton, reliving the final dash of the greatest adventure story ever told and exploring one of the most biodiverse environments on the planet.
In 1916, after leaving the crew of the Endurance fighting for survival on Elephant Island, Ernest Shackleton, along with a handful of his crew set out on a "Hail Mary" attempt at rescue. Against all odds they successfully sailed their beaten-down life boat, the James Caird, to South Georgia Island.
With its boundless opportunities to observe wildlife and breathtaking scenery at every turn South Georgia is a true Antarctic Oasis -- the most beautiful realm of the South Polar Sea. Time and again, visitors have referred to South Georgia as "Antarctica in a Nutshell," where the wonders of the world's wildest continent are all concentrated on one magical island.
Participants can join PolarExplorers on a life-changing expedition to explore South Georgia Island. Instead of the James Caird, we will be sailing on a well-equipped and comfortable ship complete with on-board naturalists and historians prior to switching to skis and mountaineering gear to recreate Shackleton’s “Final Dash” across the island before rejoining the ship on the other side. Pricing begins at $9,300 for the ship-only cruise; the guided crossing itself is a $6500 supplement for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
