Now 69, Roderick David "Rod" Stewart, CBE, was born and raised in London, and is one of the best-selling artists of all time with 100 million records sold worldwide. In the UK, he has had six consecutive Number One albums and 62 hit singles with 31 that reached the Top 10 and six Number One’s.
With his distinctive raspy voice, Stewart started singing with The Jeff Beck Group and then with the Faces in the late 1960s. His early albums were a mix of rock, folk music, soul music and R&B, while his aggressive blues work with The Jeff Beck Group and the Faces influenced heavy metal genres.
From the late 1970s through the 1990s, Stewart's music often took on a New Wave or soft rock/MOR quality, and in the early 2000s he released a series of successful albums interpreting the Great American Songbook.
A Grammy and Brit Award recipient, his hits include “Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright),” which was Number One in the U.S. for eight weeks. Other top hits include “You Wear It Well”, “Maggie May”, “(I Know) I’m Losing You”, “Every Picture Tells a Story”, “Stay With Me”, “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To Be Right”, and “Forever Young”. Stewart was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
At age 66, Carlos Santana and his band pioneered a blend of rock and Latin American music. His first album, Santana in August of 1969, reached Number Four on the U.S. charts, with the hot single "Evil Ways" hitting Nine on the Billboard Hot 100. That same month, the band's performance at Woodstock launched them into super stardom.
Santana followed up with Abraxas (including hits "Oye Como Va" and "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen") in September of 1970. It spent six weeks at Number One on the Billboard charts and stayed on the charts for 88 weeks.
The album's mix of rock, blues, jazz, salsa and other influences became Santana’s trademark over the next decades. In 1999, his popularity spiked again with his album Supernatural, featuring collaborations with Eric Clapton, Cee Lo Green, Dave Matthews and many other artists.
The album’s lead single "Smooth", co-written and sung by Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, was laced with Santana's signature guitar fills and runs and it spent 12 weeks at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100.
Supernatural eventually sold over 15 million copies in the U.S., making it Santana's biggest success by far. It also won nine Grammy Awards (eight for Santana personally) and Song of the Year for Thomas and Itaal Shur. Santana has won 10 Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
