Stationary Planet discovers how the latest innovations in Office Furniture can help your health
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 9 March 2014 -- Medical professionals have stated time and again that spending hours sitting at work, driving in the car, and the immobility during times of entertainment can cause immeasurable damage to our organs and furthermore to our health. Scientific research shows that a sedentary lifestyle not only slows down the metabolic rate but also causes deterioration to the heart, increasing the risk of heart attacks and stroke and contributing to cancer, diabetes and other chronic health problems that lower the life expectancy.
Cornell’s College of Human Ecology, along with other US institutions, compiled data from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study over a period of 12-17 years to study the impact of sedentary behaviour on the overall health and life span of almost 100,000 older women. The researchers found a 12 per cent increase in deteriorating health, chronic illnesses and fatal heart diseases in the women who spent more than 11 hours of idle activity, even if some time was spent each day in vigorous exercise. This study was published in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Preventive Medicine last month and once again shows the negative health effects of remaining sedentary for the majority of the day.
Unfortunately most work environments do not offer alternative options to counteract the effects of a day spent seated, but many interior designers and even furniture designers are researching and developing innovative ideas which allow variety in the way employees can work. Desks which allow movement, from treadmill desks to standing desks can help minimise the effects of a sedentary lifestyle and increase the metabolism, memory and mental capacity of employees. If the chances of an alternative for sitting long hours are not currently available, try adding file boxes to the desk to increase the highest to mid-chest level, enabling either a standing option or a regular sitting option when the boxes are removed.
“Although standing is better than sitting, especially for those with back problems, make sure you wear proper shoes or use a stress mat to avoid knees or joint problems and never stay on your feet if it feels uncomfortable. Also taking a five minute break every hour or simply walking to meet colleagues for a face to face chat will keep you healthy and help burn upto 40 per cent more calories each day.” advised James Peter from Stationery Planet
