Piedmont Crossing Retirement Community Welcomes Titanic Historian
Thomasville, NC (PRWEB) March 12, 2014 -- Piedmont Crossing will welcome Historian Melinda Ratchford when she speaks about the R. M. S. Titanic at the retirement community on Tuesday, March 25 at 2 p.m.
Dr. Ratchford is a native of Kannapolis, North Carolina. She received her Bachelor of Science in Social Science and a Sixth Year degree in Curriculum from Appalachian State University. Ratchford earned her Masters in Library Education from UNC- Greensboro, and later attended UNC- Chapel Hill where she received her Doctorate in Education.
Dr. Ratchford worked in the North Carolina Public Schools for 31 years and retired in July 2000. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Sister Christine Beck Department of Education at Belmont Abby College. Dr. Ratchford was the 2002 Adrian Faculty Excellence Award winner at Belmont Abby College.
Her avocation has been a fifty-five year interest in the study of the R. M. S. Titanic and her history. She has visited Belfast where the ship was built; Southampton from where she sailed; Chelsea Piers in New York where she should have docked; Halifax, Nova Scotia where the bodies were interred, and in 1996 spent a week at the site in the North Atlantic where the Titanic sank. "We are honored to have Melinda visit our campus. Everything about the Titanic fascinates people even over a century after it sank," stated Piedmont Crossing Director of Marketing Blair White.
