Supports Employment of People with Disabilities and Benefits for Those Who Cannot Work

We commend AAPD for raising awareness and highlighting the good work being done.

Allsup congratulates the 2014 American Association of People with Disabilities’ (AAPD) Awards Gala honorees. The awards will be presented Tuesday, March 18, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C. Allsup, a nationwide Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation company, is a Gala sponsor.

AAPD will present its Image Award to filmmaker Jenni Gold, whose documentary “CinemAbility,” examines media’s influence in shaping public perceptions of disability.

Talila Lewis and Jason DaSilva will receive AAPD’s Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award, which recognizes emerging leaders in the national disability rights movement. Lewis is the founder and president of Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf (HEARD). DaSilva is an award-winning filmmaker whose documentary “When I Walk,” chronicles his life with multiple sclerosis

AAPD promotes equal opportunity, economic power and independent living—ideals closely related to employment.

“Americans with disabilities are underemployed and are more likely to live in poverty,” said Mary Dale Walters, Gala committee member and Allsup senior vice president. “We commend AAPD for raising awareness and highlighting the good work being done to address these inequities.”

Allsup supports the rights of individuals who cannot work, due to a disability, to obtain the SSDI benefits they paid for while they were employed. SSDI is a payroll tax-funded, federal insurance program. Portions of the FICA taxes workers pay are set aside for SSDI, Social Security retirement and Medicare. SSDI benefits include a monthly income, access to Medicare (24 months after cash benefits begin) and return-to-work incentives. Read more about SSDI benefits here.

Tickets for the AAPD Leadership Awards Gala are available here.
