ONE WORLD Sports Extends Its Exclusive Multiplatform U.S. TV Rights With The Yomiuri Giants Through 2014
New York, New York (PRWEB) March 13, 2014 -- ONE World Sports, which offers coverage of world-class sporting events from around the globe, has reached an agreement with Nippon Television Network Corporation to extend its exclusive, multiplatform rights to all home games of the renowned Yomiuri Giants for the 2014 Nippon Professional Baseball season.
Yomiuri Giants games will be presented live on the network’s linear channel and digital platforms. Additional highlights and short-form video from the games will be distributed on broadband (http://www.oneworldsports.com) and via the network’s app, “Watch ONE World Sports.”
“Having the legendary Yomiuri Giants on ONE World Sports last season was a home run for us, so we are delighted to be bringing back the team to the network for the 2014 season,” said Alexander Brown, president and CEO of ONE World Sports. “Nippon Professional Baseball has produced scores of players who have successfully transitioned to Major League Baseball, and the Giants are a topnotch member of our network roster of world-class programming.”
ONE World Sports will kick off its new-season coverage with the Giants’ season opener on March 28.
The rush of MLB teams to woo Golden Eagles pitcher Masahiro Tanaka reflects the high caliber of talent regularly on display in the NPB. Tanaka—whose Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles won the Japan Series last season—agreed to play for the MLB’s New York Yankees in 2014, and that high-profile signing will continue to keep Japanese baseball on the minds of U.S. baseball fans in the months ahead.
The Yomiuri Giants are known to millions of baseball fans in North America and represent Japan’s oldest and most popular baseball team. Since 1988, they have played their home games in the Tokyo Dome and have played in Japan's capital city since 1936.
The Giant are holders of 22 NPB championship titles. The Giants last won the Japan Series baseball championship in 2012, and last season it took the Golden Eagles seven games to deny them a repeat Japan Series title.
The Giants are perhaps best known as the home—for nearly three decades – of home-run king Sadaharu Oh. Unlike Oh, who played his entire career with the Giants and then managed the team; the list of players transitioning from the NPB to the MLB continues to grow and features well-known sluggers such as Hideki Matsui and hurlers including Hideki Okajima and Koji Uehara.
Talent also has moved in the other direction, with players such as Reggie Smith—who jumped from the San Francisco Giants to the Yomiuri Giants— shifting careers to Japan. MLB veterans including Bobby Valentine also have had great success as managers of NPB teams.
