Navy Commander Departs on 3 Year, 68 Country, 170,000 Mile, Solo World-Wide Motorcycle Ride for Doctor's Without Boarders

Motorcycle adventurer Lacy Betton, aka HopeRider, will depart Miami at a.m. Saturday, March 15, on a three-year, 170,000-mile, solo motorcycle trip around the world in support of Doctors Without Borders.
Lacy Betton has completed three charity rides from Key West, Florida, to the Arctic Ocean, raising money for several non-profits including the American Red Cross, the Miami Rescue Mission and the Breast Cancer Association.
More than a dozen members of the Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club will escort Betton for the first ten miles of the global trip from his starting point outside the United States Southern Command in Doral.
Following Betton’s retirement as U.S. Navy Commander in 2004, he worked in civilian government service under Four-Star Army General John Kelly at the U.S. Southern Command.
Betton has chosen to use his ride to support Doctors Without Borders, having crossed paths with the non-profit many times.
“I saw Doctors Without Borders at work in Haiti after the earthquake in 2010; in Thailand after the 2004 tsunami; and in Guatemala after the 2011 floods,” said Betton, whose work took him to various areas devastated by poverty, war, natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies.
“I’ve seen them in unimaginably difficult conditions — with their tents, instruments and medical supplies — operating, bandaging, inoculating and bringing help and hope to those with nowhere else to turn. I want to support their ongoing efforts.”
