Center for Primary Care Participates in CSRA Heart Walk
Evans, GA (PRWEB) March 13, 2014 -- Center for Primary Care recently participated in and sponsored the CSRA Heart Walk. The walk took place at 8:30 a.m. March 8 and raised awareness for cardiovascular disease and heart health. Center for Primary Care was on hand at the walk to offer tips and information for maintaining a healthy heart.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the no. 1 killer of all Americans. Someone dies from CVD every 39 seconds. Heart disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined, and congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.
Cardiovascular disease, also called heart disease, includes numerous problems, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow, which can cause a heart attack or stroke.
Risk factors for cardiovascular disease include high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol and smoking. About half of Americans (49 percent) have at least one of these three risk factors. Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including diabetes, obesity, a poor diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol use.
Eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly are all ways to prevent heart disease. Make sure to eat food that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol but high in fiber and limit salt or sodium intake. Also, don’t smoke and limit alcohol consumption. The Surgeon General recommends that adults engage in moderate intensity exercise for two hours and 30 minutes each week.
Center for Primary Care is proud to have been a part of the CSRA Heart Walk and looks forward to participating again in the future. At Center for Primary Care, a healthy heart starts here. For more information, visit http://www.cpcfamilymed.com/.
