One of the all-time greats in the folk and soft rock music genres is James Taylor. The 66-year-old native of Boston, Mass. has been active in the music business since 1966 and can still be found touring around the world each year. This year will be more of the same as Taylor will hit the road for an extended tour beginning at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore. on May 30 and will run through Oct. 8, which will be the second show in as many nights at Royal Albert Hall in London. One of the stops along the way in the United States will take place at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine.
The Cross Insurance Center opened in September 2013, replacing the Bangor Auditorium which opened in 1955. The new arena will have a seating capacity of up to 8,500 people for concerts, and it features an attached 2,000-person convention center. The venue is located in close proximity to the Hollywood Casino Bangor. By the time Taylor makes his way to this venue for his concert on July 13, there would have been several other events held here, but it will certainly be packed to capacity for this show.
Taylor got his big break in the music business in 1970 with “Fire and Rain.” That was his biggest hit up to this point, but the following year, got his first No. 1 single with “You’ve Got a Friend.” Among the other chart topping songs that Taylor performed during the course of his career include “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” “Handy Man,” “Never Die Young,” “Little More Time With You,” and “It’s Growing.” He also made a guest appearance on songs with Art Garfunkel and Carly Simon that reached the top 10 charts in the United States including “Mockingbird,” “(What A) Wonderful World,” and “Devoted to You.”
Over the course of his career, Taylor has done exceptionally well when it comes to record sales. His 1970 release, Sweet Baby James, was his first album to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America three times for selling more than three million copies. In 1977, his album JT also reached 3x platinum status. He also had other platinum and gold albums, but these two were his best selling studio releases. In 1976, he released his first compilation, Greatest Hits, which was certified diamond for selling more than 10 million copies.
When Taylor takes the stage during his shows, he will be playing all his songs that made him famous at the start of his career and will also play many of the songs that helped him resurrect his career in the 1990s. He is a talented musician that takes pride in his work and enjoys playing for the live crowd. He has toured around the world and has had many successful trips including his 2010 trek that grossed more than $59 million with more than 700,000 tickets sold.
