New York Motor Vehicle Accident Lawyer Adnan Munawar Weighs-in on NY DUI Data
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 17, 2014 -- Long Island’s Suffolk County had more alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes than any other county in the state, according to an investigation done by NBC New York of the New York Stat Department of Transportation’s data from 2010 to 2012 (I-Team: Suffolk County Has Most Alcohol-Related Crashes in State, February 27, 2014). Suffolk County had 3,561 alcohol-related crashes during the period under investigation, compared to 2,366 for Nassau County. Brooklyn was at the top of the list for New York City, with 1,728 crashes.
According to the report, Police say the rates are explained by the number of bars and restaurants coupled by the fact that Suffolk County has the highest number of registered cars in the state. According to the report, the Suffolk Police Department is making efforts to deter and punish drunk driving. Through its unit of officers assigned to catching drunk drivers, the department has set up checkpoints and concentrated cars where there have been the highest rates of alcohol-related crashes to catch drunk drivers before they cause an accident. According to the report, advocate groups, such as the Mothers Against Drunk Driving, are calling for increasing the implementation of interlock devices that prevent the car from starting unless the driver passes a breath test.
“Drunk driving cases are particularly tragic because they are entirely preventable accidents caused by people who put their selfish needs above the safety of society,” said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. “While people make mistakes, there is no room for tolerating people who abuse the privilege of driving by recklessly putting others at risk. We echo the calls and concerns of advocacy groups that the state must make it a greater priority to combat the wave of intoxicated drivers that pose a serious threat to responsible, law-abiding citizens.”
“Sadly, the truth is that no matter what actions the state takes, there will likely always be people who get behind the wheel after becoming intoxicated and they will inevitably cause accidents. This reality should not discourage us from trying to minimize the number of alcohol-related accidents, but people should also know what to do if they or someone they love is the victim of a drunk driver. While there is nothing that can undo the trauma that a fatal car accident causes or bring back the deceased, victims’ families usually have the right to be financially compensated and have the driver who cause the accident be held accountable. The best way to get the compensation you deserve is to have an experienced attorney act as your guide and advocate through the complicated claims process. While you focus on recovering from injuries or mourning the loss of a loved one, you can be assured that your claims are being handled efficiently and accurately. Remember, consulting with a personal injury attorney is free and you only ever pay a fee if you win, so there is no reason not to contact a lawyer right away,” said Munawar.
