Ticket Down announces that teams from El Salvador and Ivory Coast will compete in the ‘Road to Brazil’ tournament. The official road to Brazil started last year when national soccer teams began clinching their berths in the world's most popular and prestigious soccer tournament. The “Road to Brazil” being organized by Major League Soccer will feature 10 teams competing in seven games beginning on May 29 and ending on June 7. The fifth matchup of this showcase will feature one team that will be traveling to Brazil for the World Cup and one that would like to make their trip difficult when the Ivory Coast takes on El Salvador. This game will take place on Wednesday, June 4th.
According to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, Ivory Coast is currently ranked as the 24th (at press time) best team in the world. They are a team that is the highest ranked team from the continent of Africa and is a team that will be looking for a better showing at the World Cup this year than they have had in their first two appearances in the event, where they failed to make it out of the Group Stage. In each of their previous two appearances, they have earned a lone win. They will be playing in the tough Group C against Greece, Colombia and Japan, and could struggle if they aren’t prepared for action.
The preparation is something that has been going on since the team clinched their berth in the World Cup and it is something they will need to put extra focus into when they play El Salvador. One of the best players in the world will be leading the Ivory Coast into battle for this game and the World Cup, as Didier Drogba, his 99 caps and 63 goals, will wear the captain’s armband. He will be joined on the pitch by other players that are considered to be the best in team history including Salomon Kalou, Yaya Touré, Didier Zokora and Kolo Touré.
At this point, El Salvador is a team that won’t give many of the top 50 teams in the world any problems. They are currently ranked as the 78th (as of press time) best team in the world according to FIFA and have made it to just two World Cup tournaments, being outscored a combined 22-1 with a 0-6 record. They haven’t qualified for the event since 1982. The team has had some success in other tournaments, including a second place finish in two CONCACAF Championship events.
When they take the field, El Salvador will have a good blend of youth and veteran presence. The team has a handful of players that are banned from competing because of allegedly fixing matches, so they will have to rely more on the young.
The home to this game will be the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The facility opened in 2005 and has been home to FC Dallas from MLS. The venue can seat more than 20,000 fans and it will be likely filled to capacity with fans of both teams.
