Friends and employees of Scorpion Design LLC turned out en masse at the Michael Hoefflin Foundation 2014 Walk/Run for Kids with Cancer—with more than 130 members and taking home 4 medals for leading times in the 5K run. The fourth annual event took place on March 15, 2014 in Santa Clarita and drew a record number of participants from all around Southern California. Scorpion Design received an award as the largest team in attendance, with more than 50 direct employees in addition to friends and family members showing up in support of the fundraising effort. Team shirts with the Scorpion logo were provided, and entry fees for team members were donated by the company’s charitable branch, Scorpion Cares.
The 5K event took place at the College of the Canyons, and participants could opt to walk or run a marked course winding through the hills behind the campus. Medals were awarded to first- and second-place runners in the various age categories. Four members of the Scorpion Design team took home medals, including two of the top three titles. Employees Ben Fiandaca and Meagan Tilton placed second and third overall, respectively, with Tilton leading in the 20-29 year-old women’s division and Fiandaca coming in first for the 30-40 year-old men’s bracket. Employee Sarah Pattison placed second in the women’s 20-29 year-old division, and team member Ryan Parr won the silver medal for second place in the 30-40 age group.
The Michael Hoefflin Foundation is a non-profit organization based in the Santa Clarita Valley and dedicated to helping families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer. Organizers of the 5K event called it a celebration of the lives of young children who have fought cancer as well as the families who have supported them through their battles. Altogether, the 5K event brought in more than 700 total participants and succeeded in raising $71,015 for the non-profit group.
Scorpion Design first partnered with the Michael Hoefflin Foundation in December 2013 during the company’s annual in-house charity drive facilitated by Scorpion Cares. Employees raised more than $45,000 for two local charities—including $26,000 for the Michael Hoefflin Foundation. The organization’s executive director, Gillian Stone, accepted a check in that amount on December 19. At that time, Stone announced the upcoming Walk/Run, sparking a company-wide initiative to form a team and recruit friends and family members for the spring event. Scorpion Design looks forward to more chances to partner with the Michael Hoefflin Foundation and other local charities in the future.
