Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Andre Panossian, Presenting on Hemangiomas at Conference in Melbourne, Australia
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) March 20, 2014 -- Dr. Andre Panossian, Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, is traveling to Melbourne, Australia in April to present his ground-breaking work on hemangiomas and vascular malformations at the biennial meeting for the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies. He and other experts from around the world will gather to present their cutting edge work in the field of vascular anomalies.
Dr. Panossian’s work focuses on the treatment of hemangiomas, which occur in 1 in 10 children worldwide. These are considered common benign blood vessel tumors (“strawberry birthmarks”), but can be quite disfiguring in some cases. Dr. Panossian has developed a surgical treatment to eliminate these tumors in select cases with minimal scarring and distortion. He will present his findings on over 30 children treated by his novel technique.
In addition, Dr. Panossian will be presenting his research on treatment algorithms for children born with large and disfiguring lymphangiomas (or, lymphatic malformations) of the head and neck. These are historically called “cystic hygromas” and can occur as frequently as 1 in 6000 children. In severe cases, they can cause airway obstruction and feeding difficulties, as well as bone distortion. Dr. Panossian’s research focuses on the multidisciplinary approach to the control of these sometimes massive and sometimes life-threatening lesions. By combining surgery with interventional radiology and new medical therapies, he is helping to tackle one of the most challenging problems in medicine.
The International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) was established in 1992 by an international community of specialists composed of plastic surgeons, oncologists, general surgeons, dermatologists, radiologists, and geneticists. The purpose of the Society is to promote clinical and scientific research that will lead to advances in the treatment and diagnosis of vascular tumors and malformations. The international meeting occurs biennially and attracts some of the world’s leading minds to share knowledge and research in all related disciplines.
