CoolSculpting, an innovative technology that freezes away unwanted fat, has just launched its newest applicator, CoolSmooth and is now available at Russak Dermatology Clinic, making it one of the first medical practices in the Northeast to offer this breakthrough in non-invasive fat reduction. Russak Dermatology Clinic is one of the first practices to introduce the newest applicator, available April 2014. CoolSmooth delivers non-vacuum based cooling, with a sleek conformable design. Although CoolSmooth is currently only FDA cleared for the flank (love handle) and abdomen, they are pending FDA clearance for the lateral thigh area. Zeltiq®, the parent company to CoolSculpting, conducted a recent study, 86% of patients saw a significant improvement in the lateral thigh fat bulges and would recommend treatment to family members and friends.

“Coolsculpting is a whole new way to approach fat reduction. I love that the process is all-natural - the cold temperature and your body do all of the work to remove the excess bulges,” says Dr. Russak, a board-certified dermatologist who is also clinical faculty at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “Coolsculpting is the perfect solution for that exercise-resistant fat, and requires absolutely no downtime. It sounds too good to be true, but it is just very smart technology.”

Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), CoolSculpting gently cools unwanted fat cells in the body thereby inducing a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells. Based on science developed by the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass., in the United States, this breakthrough is based on a vast body of research that demonstrates that fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlessly and permanently destroyed. Starting several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called “apoptosis” and begin to shrink and disappear. The body proceeds to naturally and gradually eliminate the cooled fat cells, giving your skin time to tighten in the process eliminating unwanted "flabby" or loose skin that can be seen post liposuction.

The CoolSmooth is a flat, non-vacuum applicator that is perfect for treating areas of non-pinchable fat including the saddle-bag areas of the outer thighs and inner thighs. Its unique conformable design allows the applicator to fit your individual shape. Being that the CoolSmooth applicator does not rely on suction to treat areas of excessive fat, physicians can now freeze the fat of almost all areas of the body, even those areas that require very small fat reduction.

“CoolSmooth is a game changer in the cosmetic industry. This accordion-like, conformable applicator can extend and contract, wrapping around the mid-section, thigh area or arm area. The design of the applicator makes it very versatile where it can be placed, broadening the scope of treatable areas,” says Dr. Russak. “The CoolSmooth reduces the overall fat where the applicator is placed, now targeting a larger, overall area. Before the launch of CoolSmooth, the CoolSculpting applicators, CoolFit, CoolCore, CoolCurve, CoolMax, all use vacuum based technology to draw in the fat tissue, targeting an isolated area. Since the CoolSmooth delivers cooling without drawing in a specific amount of tissue, the applicator can treat a larger, overall area.”

“I’m very impressed with my results – particularly for a non-invasive treatment. Within several weeks of my first treatment, I noticed the fat around the treated area lessened considerably and my clothes fit so much better,” says Susan, a CoolSculpting patient of Dr. Russak’s. “I highly recommend CoolSculpting, especially for people who have stubborn body fat that diet and exercise alone do not seem to help (see attached before and after photo).”

Unlike many other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, surgery or downtime. During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area thereby specifically targeting fat. Treatments last between one to two hours. Patients can have additional procedures for more pronounced effects if they desire. On average, each CoolSculpting procedure results in an undeniable reduction of fat in the treated area, and patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results occurring over a period of two to four months in most patients.
