Mostyn Law Donates Computers to Elijah Rising to Fight Human Trafficking
Houston, Texas (PRWEB) March 20, 2014 -- Mostyn Law has donated computer equipment to Houston-based Elijah Rising, a nonprofit seeking to combat and raise awareness of human and sex trafficking.
The charity is particularly focused on the Houston area, which has been noted by law enforcement as one of the worst for sex trafficking in the country. Elijah Rising works with law enforcement, social workers, and volunteers to perform outreach to sex workers and victims of human trafficking. Van tours of known sex trafficking areas are also provided to help raise awareness among the general public.
“Human trafficking is a problem that only gets attention at certain times,” said Jeff Rotkoff, a spokesman for Mostyn Law. “Some individual cases get media attention and the Super Bowl often highlights the issue but the public needs to be aware of how prevalent and serious this problem really is.”
Elijah Rising received four towers and one complete workstation from Mostyn Law, which was given to a victim who was captured at 14-years old and had been trapped for 24 years.
“Groups like Elijah Rising do important work that needs to be supported,” Rotkoff said. “They help members of the community lookout for human trafficking and that type of larger awareness is necessary to help curb the problem.”
Along with victim support and awareness, Elijah Rising, which takes its name from a Bible passage, monitors online prostitution advertisements. In some instances, the group will even intercede to help remove the victim from their abusive environment. Elijah Rising also educates employees at hotels, strip clubs and other businesses for signs of human trafficking.
Houston is routinely listed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for being one of the highest ranked cities in terms of number of human trafficking victims. The DOJ estimates that victims of human trafficking generate nearly $9.5 billion for their abusers. By some estimates, sex trafficking victims can be forced to engage in sexual activity as many as 45 times a day.
