HNTB Corporation and the City of Miami Recognized for Miami Trolley System
Miami (PRWEB) March 20, 2014 -- HNTB Corporation, an infrastructure solutions firm celebrating 60 years of service in Miami and its 100th anniversary nationwide, in partnership with the City of Miami, has earned the annual “Award of Excellence” for the Miami Trolley from the Gold Coast Chapter of the American Planning Association. The Miami Trolley is the City of Miami’s first municipal mass transit project.
Odalys Delgado, AICP, principal planner for HNTB, working with the City of Miami, is responsible for supporting the city in the development, implementation, and continued operation of the Miami Trolley, which increases mobility options for residents, workers, and visitors throughout the city’s core. As of December 2013, the system had a total monthly ridership of 297,539.
“People who didn’t normally use mass transit services are now using the trolleys to commute between work and home,” said Delgado. “Ridership is growing since the trolley’s launch, which means the City of Miami is doing its part to ease congestion by keeping vehicles off overburdened roadways and making commutes easier for everyone.”
The Miami Trolley launched with one route in March 2012. It now comprises five different routes using 34 trolleys, and further expansion, to Coconut Grove and elsewhere, is being considered. The trolleys offer passengers free rides and are funded primarily through Miami-Dade County’s half-cent transportation sales tax, with additional funds from the Florida Department of Transportation.
The American Planning Association is an organization that provides leadership in the development of vital communities by advocating excellence in planning, promoting education and citizen empowerment, and providing the tools and support necessary to meet the challenges of growth and change.
