Tampa, Fl (PRWEB) March 20, 2014
Florida Hospital Tampa is hosting “A Cancer Symposium” with a focus on the three big c’s- breast, GI, and lung cancers to educate the community on prevention, treatment, support and therapy. This event is free to the public and will take place at the USF Embassy Suites Hotel on Tuesday, March 25th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Keynote speakers include Dr. Charles Cox, Dr. Alexander Rosemurgy and Dr. Dragos Zanchi, as well as Dr. Harvey Greenberg and Dr. Ron Schiff. The symposium will also include keynote speaker roundtables and breakout sessions highlighting information about physical therapy for cancer patients, palliative care and advice for caregivers.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,665,540 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2014, and about 585,720 Americans are expected to die of cancer- almost 1,600 people per day. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths.
A new report from the American Cancer Society stated that cancers associated with lifestyles and behaviors related to economic development, including lung, breast and colorectal cancers will continue to rise in developing countries if preventive measures are not widely applied. By 2030, the global cancer burden is expected to nearly double, growing to 21.4 million cases and 13.2 million deaths. And while that increase is the result of demographic changes- a growing and aging population- it may be compounded by the adoption of unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors related to economic development, such as smoking, poor diet, and physical inactivity.
“Florida Hospital Tampa is committed to advancing the prevention diagnosis and treatment of cancer because we know early detection is the key to fighting all forms of the disease. Our responsibility to the community is to not only provide care for those who are ill or injured, but also education about disease prevention so that we can help create a healthier community. Our commitment to cancer care can be seen through our innovative treatments, supportive therapies, education and the compassionate care of our healthcare professionals,” said Brian Adams, President and CEO at Florida Hospital Tampa.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, exceeded only by lung cancer according to the American Cancer Society. While one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime- the survival rates are encouraging and continuing to increase. Cancers of the Gastrointestinal tract can include Esophageal, Stomach, Pancreas, Liver, Gallbladder, Biliary and Colorectal Cancers. Pancreatic cancer affects approximately 45,000 people per year in the United States with an almost equal number of deaths. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer related death in the United States. The overall 5 year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 6 %. Resection remains the only hope of cure. Advancements in diagnostics, chemotherapeutic agents, and surgical techniques (ie, robotic Whipple, a specialized surgical treatment for cancerous or benign tumors at the head of the pancreas) offer new hope for patients. Lung cancer is the most common of all cancers, accounting for more deaths annually than the next three forms of cancer combined (colon, breast and prostate). Lung cancer used to be primarily a man’s cancer, but the incidence for women has risen over the past 25 years. New technology is helping with early detection and reducing the mortality rate for lung cancer. In a trial, published by the New England Journal of Medicine, over 50,000 patients at high risk for lung cancer were randomly assigned to be screened by either a standard chest X-ray or a low-dose Computer Tomography (CT) scan. The trial revealed that lung cancer screening by CT scan reduces the lung cancer death rate by 20%.
