Santa Barbara, CA (PRWEB) March 21, 2014 -- With K-12 budgets just squeaking out from under years of crippling cuts, and technology imperatives accelerating all the time, keeping teachers up to speed with EdTech can’t be left to traveling PD specialists any more.
Lesson Planet edtech professional development specialists Jennifer Gibson and Rich Dixon will present “Becoming the Solution: Building EdTech Teacher Leadership Capacity” on Saturday, March 22 at 12 noon at the CUE 2014 (Computer Using Educators) conference in Palm Springs.
“We’ve been helping individual teachers to use technology to make their teaching better since 1999,” said Gibson, the company’s director of content and learning, who has 18 years in the classroom under her belt. “So, of course, we advocate for those same teachers to use their tech knowledge to lead their peers at school.”
Empowering teachers to serve as experts solves three nagging problems with school and district reliance on external trainers:
• External trainers can’t be everywhere at once.
• Trainees become passive, diluting their impetus to find and develop solutions.
• When external trainers move on, follow-up guidance does too and implementation stalls.
“A lot of teachers already provide technology leadership, either because they’re interested by nature, or because they help their colleagues on an informal basis,” said Dixon, director of strategic relationships and 22-year teaching and administrative veteran. “How many of us ‘go next door’ with tech issues because we know a teacher there who can help?”
In 2014, CUE celebrates 35 years of advancing student achievement through technology. The annual CUE conference is the oldest and largest educational technology conference in California and among the largest in the United States. It is widely considered the premier professional development event in California and beyond.
