The Marine Corps Award a Contract for the Infrascanner™ Model 2000
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) March 24, 2014 -- InfraScan, a medical device company specializing in brain injury diagnostic products, announced today that it has signed a 3 year, Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase III contract with the US Marine Corps to supply up to 250 Infrascanner™ Model 2000 systems, and the possibility of procuring disposable shields, spare parts and associated training.
The Infrascanner™ Model 2000 is a handheld device with a disposable patient interface that uses Near-Infrared (NIR) technology to detect intracranial bleeding, identifying those patients who would most benefit from immediate referral to a CT scan and neurosurgical intervention thereby expediting the intervention required to ensure better patient outcomes. The Infrascanner™ Model 2000 was developed in partnership with U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The Model 2000 features upgrades that meet the specifications of the U.S. Marine Corps and is a ruggedized, integrated, user-friendly unit.
The Marine Corps leads the way in the early detection of intracranial hematomas in the field. These types of injuries are usually caused by a head injury, such as from a fall, motor vehicle collision, close proximity to a blast, or an assault. The sudden blow to the head tears blood vessels in the brain. This is referred to as an acute brain hematoma. The Marine Corps has determined the need to procure a hand-held, non-invasive, near infrared based diagnostic device to detect brain hematoma at the site of injury. The Infrascanner™ will be used by medical elements of the USMC field forces as a practical solution to the early detection of intracranial hematomas. Fielding of the device is planned for third quarter of 2014.
