Salaries in the Intellectual Property sector can fluctuate quite dramatically between firms, according to Fellows and Associates data, and in the opinion of the company the industry can be quite secretive on information of this nature. Factors such as an increase in workload in a certain technical area and a higher demand for candidates with the necessary skillset can result in firms needing to compete to secure the new recruit by offering a salary higher than the market average, hence skewing the norm for a candidate at that level. The survey is hoped to give an unbiased and clear break down of current salaries for professionals at all levels of seniority and technical background.
The survey gained an increase in participants following from 2013 thanks to enthusiastic promotion across social networks and the involvement of relevant bodies in the sector. “I would like to thank both IPKat and CIPA, who increased awareness of the survey. IPKat is a respected blog covering IP issues from a mainly UK and European perspective, they have a tremendous following across the industry and were kind enough to tweet links to our survey to their impressive follower base. ” Michele explains. “We also had fantastic cooperation from CIPA with significant promotion across their on line and off line platforms, as well as an article that I wrote especially for them.”
The survey also had the added support of their sponsor, The Patent Lawyer magazine, who came on board for 2014. The sponsor encouraged participation through educating their readership about the survey and providing an additional source for advertising. Pete Fellows explains “our partnership with The Patent Lawyer is an exciting new venture for us; we are able to assist in increasing awareness of their various projects and vice versa. Our joint efforts could spell interesting collaborations in the future, hopefully further strengthening our positions in the Intellectual Property market.”
Another factor perhaps adding to the survey’s success is the currently building momentum of Fellows and Associates’ social networks. Phillipa Field, consultant, explains “our on line presence is immensely important to us as we operate as an international business. We invest heavily in our social networks, such as Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn and see them as effective tools both in terms of brand management and for widening our network and contact base”.
Involvement in the survey was encouraged across the full reach of Fellows and Associates’ social networks and they will be taking to the Internet once again to announce when the survey results are ready to be viewed. Michele is well underway in preparing the survey for final consumption. “I am currently in the process of digesting and ordering all of the information into an easily accessible document which will be then made available on line and in print form.”
