The employees of Pharmica Consulting met at Sebastian Riding Associates the morning of March 21, 2014 to spend their day volunteering with the staff there. “We have been looking for different ways that Pharmica could get involved with local community organizations,” said Matt Kiernan, Partner with Pharmica Consulting, who was on hand at Sebastian’s. “When one of our consultants, Gerry vonBlohn, told us about Sebastian Riding Associates, we knew it would be a great way to get started.”
Under the supervision of instructors, volunteers at Sebastian Riding Associates typically assist in giving lessons, caring for program horses, and helping with special events. Volunteers also help students groom and tack up horses, lead a horse through a lesson, or walk alongside a horse and rider. Pharmica assisted instructors and riders, while also helping perform various maintenance activities. Volunteers replaced fence rails, scraped the barn to get it ready for a new coat of paint, cleaned harnesses and feed bins, hung new mirrors in the arena, and cleared riding and hiking trails, among other tasks.
“Volunteers are the backbone of our program. Therapeutic riding is extremely labor intensive and Sebastian’s depends largely on community and family volunteers to conduct safe and enjoyable lessons,” said Frank Viall, President of Sebastian’s. “For almost 40 years, Sebastian Riding Associates has relied on the generosity of corporate partners like Pharmica for time volunteered and donations to continue our mission. The time Pharmica employees spent here on Friday allowed us to get a long list of tasks completed in a short period of time. Thanks to all who attended, and to Gerry who organized the day!”
