The 2014 NCAA men’s basketball tournament has been filled with many surprises than there has been in years. It all started on Selection Sunday when the brackets were announced leaving many questions left to be answered about why some teams were ranked as low or hight as they were and why others were left off completely. One bracket that has made for some interesting action has been the East bracket where just Virginia, Michigan State, Iowa State and Connecticut remain. These four teams will take to the court in the Sweet 16 on March 28 from the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden.
The top rated team in the bracket is the 30-6 Virginia Cavaliers. The team was 16-2 in ACC action this season and while they struggled a bit to win their 1-16 matchup against Coastal Carolina, was able to get the 70-59 victory. In the third round, they played Memphis and won 78-60. With the victory, they advanced to the Sweet 16 where they are set to take on one of the popular picks to win the National Championship, the No. 4 seeded Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans are 28-8 this season after going 12-6 in the Big Ten. In the second round, the Spartans defeated Delaware by 15 points and then defeated Harvard 80-73.
In the other game at MSG that night, the No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones will take their 28-7 record (11-7 Big 12) and battle the 28-8 (12-6 AAC) No. 7 Connecticut Huskies. The Cyclones were expected to be in this position and got here by beating NC Central 93-75 and North Carolina 85-83. The Huskies weren’t expected to even get out of the first round by many, but beat St. Josephs 89-81 and then took down the No. 2 seeded and former Big East Conference rival Villanova Wildcats, 77-65.
Madison Square Garden is the home of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association and the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. The facility that stands today first opened in 1968 and has witnessed many classic events from all sports and entertainment activities. From world-class and Grammy Award winning musicians to World Wrestling Entertainment WrestleMania events to Big East tournament action, the venue has seen the elite of the elite play or perform here. When these four teams lace up their sneakers to play for their chance to compete in the Elite 8, it will be another set of classic games played at the venue.
